Bug Catching

Fields of Mistria Insect Guide (All 93 Bugs)

Every catchable bug with its season, spot, time and price — plus how the five legendary insects spawn, and what Apiaries and Terrariums turn bugs into.

🦋 Quick Answer

Luc's quest "Something's Bugging Me" (Request Board, Spring 4) hands you the Worn Net. From there, 93 bugs are catchable across the overworld, beach, Deep Woods and every mine region — sneak up slowly and swing. Balor's Wagon also sells some bugs outright if a request is rushing you.

How Bug Spawns Actually Work

The game rolls several bugs per screen when the screen loads — the wiki's own tip: if you need one specific overworld bug, re-enter The Summit (visible in one screen, unlocked by the "Beautification Project" quest) until it spawns. Four other spawn triggers hide bugs in plain sight:

  • Breaking rocks: Roly Poly (spring), Jewel Beetle (summer), Chillipede (fall), Snug Bug (winter), Redhead Worm, plus Worm, Tunnel Millipede, Sea Scarab, Deep Earthworm and Rock Roach in the mines.
  • Shaking trees: Caterpillar, Cicada, Walking Leaf, Winterpillar, Crystal Caterpillar, Loam Caterpillar.
  • Cutting grass: the hopper family — Petalhopper, Strawhopper, Leafhopper, Icehopper, Grasshopper.
  • On water: Pond Skater (The Narrows, Eastern Road and town ponds).

Time windows use three bands: Day 6 AM-8 PM, Night 8 PM-2 AM, All day 6 AM-2 AM.

The 5 Legendary Insects

Legendaries are the "Very Rare" tier — the museum's Legendary set and the Entomologist achievement need all five. Since patch v0.14.2 they can appear at any time of day; season and weather still matter:

Flower Crown BeetleSpringSunny, Wind30t
Strobe FireflySummerSunny30t
Fairy BeeFallSunny, Wind30t
Snowball BeetleWinterBlizzard only30t
Speedy SnailSpring, Summer, FallSunny, Wind, Rain30t

Three force-multipliers, all wiki-verified:

  • The Summit reload trick — the whole Summit fits on one screen, so exit and re-enter until the legendary spawns. This is the standard hunting method.
  • Perfect Pollinators (Farming Tier 4 perk, 155 Essence) makes legendary bugs appear more often.
  • Legendary Bug Pheromones summon the sixth legendary: the Biggest Beetle (120t, the game's priciest bug), which only ever appears from a pheromone puff.

Pheromone-Only Bugs

Five bugs never spawn naturally — you pour Bug Pheromones on open ground and the matching bug appears: Ant Queen and Sunset Moth (Common pheromones), Saint Mantis (Uncommon, 60t), Queen's Birdwing (Rare, 90t) and Biggest Beetle (Legendary, 120t). Together they form the museum's Bug Pheromone set.

Apiaries & Terrariums: What Bugs Are For

The Town Rank 30 story quest "Apiaries and Terrariums" unlocks both stations. Each takes 4 bugs of the same rarity, requests one item every 3 days, and pays out on delivery:

  • Apiary (bees only): any 4 bees make Honey (50t) or the occasional Honeycomb (500t); 4 uncommon bees (Sweet/Big Bee) make Premium Honey (100t); 4 rare bees (Flower/Moonlight Bee) make Deluxe Honey (200t); and 4 Fairy Bees make Legendary Honey (500t) — yes, that means catching four legendary bees. Darcy's request pays 1,000t for a jar.
  • Terrarium (any non-bee bugs): produces Bug Pheromones or Fish Bait at the tier of its residents — 4 uncommon bugs for Uncommon output, 4 rare for Rare, 4 legendaries for Legendary Pheromones. Fish Bait feeds the Fish Bait and Fish Trap fish, so the fishing and bug systems loop into each other.

Museum, Gifts & Requests

85 of the 93 bugs are museum donations — the Insects Wing runs 19 sets with beekeeper outfits, insect furniture and wearable butterfly, dragonfly and beetle wings as rewards (set list). The eight the museum won't take: Chillipede, Polar Fly, Pond Skater, Question Mark Butterfly, Redhead Worm, Rhinoceros Beetle, Snail and Snug Bug.

As gifts, most villagers dislike bugs — the one big exception is Luc, the town's young entomologist, whose Loved list is practically an insect box: Bumblebee, Copper Nugget Beetle, Fairy Bee, Jewel Beetle, Rhinoceros Beetle, Roly Poly, Sea Scarab and Strobe Firefly (plus the Amber Trapped Insect artifact). Check anyone else in the Gift Finder before gifting a bug. Requests also ask for specific catches — Luc alone posts four (Copper Nugget Beetle, Dragon Horn Beetle, Pond Skater, Singing Katydid), and Seridia's board requests include a Fire Wasp.

FAQ

How do you catch legendary bugs?

Each of the five spawns in its season (Flower Crown Beetle in spring, Strobe Firefly in summer, Fairy Bee in fall, Snowball Beetle in winter blizzards, Speedy Snail spring through fall) at any time of day. Reload The Summit until one appears, and the Perfect Pollinators perk raises their spawn rate. A sixth, the Biggest Beetle, only comes from Legendary Bug Pheromones.

What is the legendary bee?

The Fairy Bee — a legendary insect found on sunny or windy fall days. Beyond the museum's Legendary set, it has a production use: put 4 Fairy Bees in an Apiary and it produces Legendary Honey, which sells for 500t a jar (Darcy's request pays 1,000t).

Where do you find the Katydid?

The Singing Katydid lives in The Deep Woods, any season, any time — it's a rare spawn worth 70t. The Deep Woods itself unlocks by breaking the Fire Seal on mine floor 60, and Luc's request pays 225t for one.

Where do you catch the Question Mark Butterfly?

In the overworld on sunny or windy days, spring through fall, during daytime. It's uncommon and sells for 15t — and it's one of the eight bugs the museum doesn't collect, so it's purely for selling or requests.

What is the Insects Wing?

One of the museum's four wings: 19 sets of donated bugs, honey and terrarium products. Completing its Legendary set (all five legendary insects) unlocks the Entomologist achievement, and set rewards include wearable butterfly, dragonfly and beetle wings.

What are the most valuable bugs?

The Biggest Beetle tops the list at 120t (Legendary Pheromones only), then the Ancient Ruins trio — Hidden Beetle 90t, Parchment Moth 80t — plus Queen's Birdwing 90t and the Diamond Beetle 80t in the Lava Caves. For steady income, Apiary honey beats selling the bees.
