Fields of Mistria Animals Guide

Cows to capybaras: how to buy, feed, breed and befriend every animal — plus color tiers, golden products, and the two rideable mounts.

🐄 Quick Answer

Build a Coop or Barn first (blueprints at the Carpenter), then adopt animals at Hayden's Shop, where you pick each animal's species, color and sex. Feed and pet daily — hearts drive better products.

Getting Your First Animals

Animals are adopted from Hayden's Shop on Sweetwater Farm, west of yours. You need a building with free space first. Cows and chickens are available from the start; horses, sheep, ducks and rabbits unlock after the story quest "Upgrade Hayden's Barn", and alpacas and capybaras additionally require reaching your first winter.

Both buildings come in red or white for the same price, and both can be moved later: removing one through its menu returns the blueprint and all materials. Coops include incubators (1/2/4 by size) for hatching bred eggs. Planning where they go? See the farm layout guide.

Coop animals mature in 3 days, barn animals in 5. At 8 hearts products have a chance to come out Golden (Golden Milk, Golden Eggs, Golden Rooster Feathers…), and at 10 hearts every product is guaranteed Golden. The Barnyard Bounty perks add extra-drop chances per animal pair.

Feeding Animals (What Do They Eat?)

  • Troughs: put Hay in the Barn trough and Grass Seed in the Coop trough. Hay comes from cutting grass, Hayden's Shop or Balor's Wagon (50t).
  • Hand feeding: hold food and interact. Milled feed gives bonus friendship — Quality (+1), Deluxe (+3), Ultimate (+5) — and certain crops and forageables work too. With the Currency of Care III perk, even cooked dishes do (better dishes, more Shiny Beads).
  • Grazing: animals let outside eat the grass growing on your farm — and they will eat your growing crops if they're otherwise unfed. Fence your fields, or feed everyone before ringing the bell.

Hearts, Friendship & Production Tiers

Petting (+5), feeding (+5, +2 bonus when you do both), clear-weather outdoor time and toys all add heart points; skipping care (−5 per missed action), leaving animals out overnight (−5) or sending them out in bad weather all subtract. Hearts translate directly into output:

8210% chance of an extra Golden product

Useful helpers: the bell outside each building calls its animals in or out at once; the craftable Big Bell (The Bell Tolls perk, Ranching tier 4) does it farm-wide; and the Animal Sprite Statue auto-pets everything in a Large Coop/Barn while powered by an Essence Stone (it marks animals as pet, but gives fewer points than petting by hand).

Breeding & Baby Animals

Breeding needs a male and female of the same species, both at 2+ hearts, in the same building with at least one free space. Feed both a species-specific Heart Shaped Treat from Hayden's Shop on the same day — a stork icon appears in the Animals menu, and the baby arrives (or the egg hatches) 4 days later.

Animal Colors: The 6 Tiers

Every species has colors in 6 rarity tiers — for chickens, that runs from Brown/Spotted/White (tier 1) through Blue/Pink/Purple (tier 3) to Silver (4), Gold (5) and the seasonal Spring/Summer/Fall/Winter variants (tier 6). Colors are purely cosmetic: production depends on hearts, never on color.

Breeding is how you climb the ladder, and the offspring's color is random within its tier — the wiki is explicit that it's not a mixing system ("red cow × blue cow" does not make a purple cow):

  • Same tier × same tier → guaranteed one tier higher (below tier 6).
  • Adjacent tiers → roughly 50% at the higher parent's tier, 50% one above it.
  • Seasonal (tier 6): tier 5 × tier 5 has a chance; tier 6 × tier 6 is the only guarantee. The season the parents are bred in decides the variant, and each seasonal animal arrives with a unique cosmetic.

Higher-tier animals also sell for more at Hayden's Shop (sale price scales with hearts and color tier — any adult that isn't pregnant can be sold).

Roosters & Golden Rooster Feathers

A "rooster" is simply a male chicken — choose the sex when adopting at Hayden's, or breed for one. Males produce Rooster Feathers every 3 days instead of eggs; at 8+ hearts those can come out as Golden Rooster Feathers (guaranteed at 10 hearts) — a Loved gift for Landen and part of Ryis' Loved list too. Check who wants animal products in the Gift Finder.

Mounts: The Mistmare & the Big Chicken

Mistmare: after "Upgrade Hayden's Barn", Hayden's quest "Find the Weathervane" reveals the Horse Statue on the western side of The Narrows. Unlock it with 100 Essence and you get the Mistmare, a summonable spectral horse (default key: =) that outruns you anywhere outside buildings and mines. Its statue sells three perks: Horsepower (+10% speed), Harvest Horse (running over forage or grown crops pops them out), and Nice Ride — which lets your large animals' appearances be unlocked at 5 hearts as rideable skins.

Big Chicken: 1.0's signature mount, officially teased with "Travel Mistria in style with the big chicken mount!" — per the 1.0 release notes it's unlocked by raising all 6 chicken tiers, which makes the breeding ladder above your to-do list. See the 1.0 update page for everything else the release added.

FAQ

What do animals eat in Fields of Mistria?

Barn animals eat Hay from the barn trough; coop animals eat Grass Seed from the coop trough. You can also hand-feed milled Animal Feed (Quality/Deluxe/Ultimate) for bonus friendship, and animals let outside graze on grass — or on your growing crops if they're otherwise unfed.

Can you let animals out in winter?

You can — what matters is the weather, not the season. Animals gain friendship outside in clear weather (sun or wind) and lose friendship if sent out in rain, snow, blizzards or storms, so on snowy days keep them in their fed barn or coop. Never leave them out overnight (−5 friendship).

How do you get a rooster?

Adopt a male chicken at Hayden's Shop — you choose each animal's sex (and color) when buying. Males produce Rooster Feathers every 3 days, which turn Golden at high hearts (chance at 8, guaranteed at 10).

How does animal breeding work?

Feed a male and a female of the same species (2+ hearts, same building, a free space available) their Heart Shaped Treats from Hayden's Shop on the same day. A stork icon confirms it, and the baby arrives 4 days later. Same-tier parents always produce a color one tier higher, up to the seasonal tier 6.

What is the giant chicken?

The rideable Big Chicken mount added in 1.0. Per the official release notes it unlocks once you have raised all 6 chicken color tiers — so it's the reward at the top of the chicken-breeding ladder.

What's the best animal to buy first?

Chickens are the cheapest entry (1,000t plus a 1,500t Small Coop) and lay eggs daily; cows cost more but give daily milk. Every-3-days producers like sheep and rabbits pay less often. There's no wiki-documented profit table per animal yet, so start with daily producers and breed up from there.
