Fields of Mistria Mines Guide

The complete guide to the Fields of Mistria mines: unlock conditions, floor structure, every ore and artifact, and the special floors worth seeking.

Unlocking the Mines

The mines sit at the northernmost part of The Narrows. To enter them, you must raise your town to Stone rank and complete the story quest "Unlocking The Mines". Once open, the mines are your main source of ores, gems, artifacts, and the only place where monsters appear.

Floor Structure & Elevators

The mines begin at a Ground Floor (G) with a ladder down to Floor 1. An elevator connects every 5th floor (5, 10, 15, 20…) back to the ground, unlocking permanently once you reach it, so always take the elevator before leaving. Returning to the ground floor resets the mine layouts, and the first floor never spawns monsters.

Early Upper Mines. Floor 1 never spawns monsters; ladders and every 5th-floor elevator are how you move.

The mines contain five biomes as you descend: Upper Mines, Tide Caverns, Deep Earth, Lava Caves, and the deepest Ancient Ruins (the source of Mistril Ore). The Lava Caves and Stone Refinery were added in v0.13.0.

Biome-by-Biome Breakdown

Each biome has its own ore, monsters, forageables, fish, and artifacts. Elevator floors mark the boundary between biomes at floors 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100.

With the Ore-Riginal perk, ordinary rocks in each biome also drop that biome's ore. Breaking cracked rocks with your pickaxe reliably yields ore, and with the Perfect Pick perk you can mine Perfect gems and ores, which are museum artifacts, not smeltable material.

Ores, Gems & Artifacts

All rocks drop stone, peat, sod, and clay. With the Ore-Riginal perk, rocks also drop copper, iron, silver, gold, and Mistril ore, mapping to Upper Mines, Tide Caverns, Deep Earth, Lava Caves, and Ancient Ruins respectively.

Artifacts are found throughout the mines and can be donated to the museum. Keep an eye out for Black Tablet, Completely Wrong Map, Muttering Cube, Unknown Dragon Statuette, Weightless Stone, Diamond-backed Mirror, Obsidian Blade, Shortcut Scroll, Stone Horse, and various Ritual items. Some require the Well Placed or Lost to History perks to appear.

Special Floors & Mechanics

  • Treasure Room: needs the Treasure Hunter perk; spawns chests, ladders, and ore nodes that stay all day.
  • Dragon Priestess Floor: make an offering (e.g. 10 stone, 5 iron ore, 3 coral) for +25 HP, +20 stamina, and +10 Essence.
  • Fountain Floor: drink once to restore +20 HP and +20 stamina.
  • Locked Ladder Floor: flip a switch to unlock the ladder down.
  • Ritual Chambers: need Lost to History; open the urn for the Dragon Cleric Outfit Set and ritual artifacts.
  • Arena Floor: the ladder is locked until you defeat all monsters.

Chests appear from Floor 2 onward in wood, copper, silver, and gold tiers. Note that elevator floors never spawn chests. Whirlpools in water teleport you to another whirlpool on the same floor, and breaking crates and barrels with your weapon can drop loot.

Finding the ladder down: ladders are hidden in rocks or drop from defeated monsters. Breaking rocks is the main way, the ladders descend one floor, and climbing up a ladder returns you to the Ground Floor rather than the previous floor. If you find a whirlpool, interact with it to teleport to a linked whirlpool on the same floor.

Farming Treasure Floors

The Treasure Hunter perk (Mining Tier 1) makes Treasure Rooms appear, each spawns a random chest, a ladder, and several nodes of biome ore. Once a Treasure Room spawns, it persists for the rest of the day, so you can farm it by returning to the surface and re-entering the mines. Several treasure rooms in a row are possible, and the Treasured perk increases chest spawn rates. Chest loot improves with other skills: Well Armed adds armor and weapons, Reclaimer furniture, Taste Maker recipes, and Dungeon Delicacies cooked dishes.

Mining Tips

  • Unlock the Dragon Statue early: spend Essence there on Mining and Combat perks (the entrance to the mines has its own statue).
  • Build the Teleportation Chalice at the Stone Refinery to warp back to your farm for 10 Essence per use.
  • Bring food: the mines have no beds, and fainting on a deep run costs you time and items. Fountain and Dragon Priestess floors offer free recovery.
  • Keep a chest at home as a drop point for long mining trips, and always hit the elevator on new floors before exploring further.

💡 Pro Tip

Each biome's ore feeds your next tool tier: Copper tools need Copper Ingots, Iron tools Iron Ingots, and so on. If you are short on a metal, craft the ore into ingots at the Blacksmith (10 ore → 1 ingot, less with the Expert perks) before buying tools.
