Check compatibility before you download

Fields of Mistria moved to NPC Studio's internal engine. Mods built for the previous engine are not compatible, and modded saves may behave unexpectedly. A mod page that says "new engine" is stronger evidence than an old upload date, but it is not a promise that every future patch will work.

Install on Windows or Steam Deck/Linux

Windows

  1. Back up your save files before adding the first mod.
  2. In Steam, open Properties, then Installed Files, then Browse to find the game folder. Do not copy a file path from another player's computer.
  3. Read the selected mod's Requirements section. Install the current MOMI build only when the mod asks for it.
  4. Extract the mod exactly as its author describes, run MOMI, and start the game with one new mod at a time.

Steam Deck and Linux

  1. Use MOMI's current Steam Deck/Linux build and instructions. The game now has native SteamOS/Linux support, so old Proton paths may no longer match your setup.
  2. Check whether the individual mod documents Steam Deck or Linux. If it does not, treat platform support as unconfirmed.
  3. Install one mod, start a test save, and check the result before adding another.

If MOMI will not open on Steam Deck or Linux

MOMI version 0.13.0 was updated on 2026-08-19. Its author page supports Windows and Steam Deck/Linux, but it does not document a separate fix for the installer itself failing to open on Steam Deck.

  1. Close the game and MOMI, then back up the saves you care about before changing files.
  2. Download the current build from the original MOMI page. Do not reuse an old Proton path or copy a folder path from another player.
  3. If the error started after a game update, use Uninstall All in MOMI, verify the game files in Steam, reopen MOMI, and reinstall your mods. The author says to run this sequence twice before asking for help.
  4. If MOMI will not open far enough to use its uninstall controls, stop. Do not delete unknown folders or overwrite your only save. Keep the error text or screenshot and ask for help through the MOMI source page.

Back up before changing a save

Keep a copy of the saves you care about before installing, updating, or removing mods. Save Anywhere writes to the autosave file, so make an extra backup before testing it. Cosmetic and content mods may also have author-specific removal steps; follow the source page instead of deleting files blindly.

If the game stops loading

  1. Close the game and note the last mod or update you added.
  2. Use MOMI's uninstall option, then verify the game's files in Steam. Reinstall the current MOMI build and add mods back one at a time.
  3. Check for missing dependencies, duplicate nested folders, and a newer file in the mod's Files or Posts sections.
  4. If a modded save behaves unexpectedly, stop testing on that save and restore your backup. A backup reduces risk, but it cannot guarantee recovery from every mod conflict.
