Who Can You Romance?

In Fields of Mistria, only characters marked as "single" can develop a romantic relationship. There are exactly 12 marriage candidates: six bachelorettes, Celine, Juniper, Reina, Valen, Adeline, and the hidden Seridia, and six bachelors, Balor, March, Hayden, Ryis, Eiland, and the hidden Caldarus.

Seridia and Caldarus appear with mystery portraits until their story is unlocked, and both require completing specific main-story quests to fully pursue. Every other candidate becomes available as you raise their friendship.

Marriage and Children Checklist for 1.0

1. Reach 8 hearts and choose the Dating route during that candidate's heart event.
2. Raise the relationship to 10 hearts. Elsie then brings the Engagement Ring recipe.
3. Craft the ring, propose, choose an available wedding date, and confirm the ceremony details with your partner.
4. After marriage, wait two weeks for the family-planning dream and the Mystic Feather. Use it only when you are ready to start the child sequence.
5. After you confirm the arrival choice, the child arrives two weeks later.

Plan before you commit: in version 1.0 there is no breakup or divorce, and you can marry only one person. The detailed sections below explain the dates and choices. They also warn before spouse-specific or child-specific story details.

How to Reach Romance: Heart Levels Explained

Every character has heart levels from 1 to 10 since the 1.0 update. To start dating a candidate, you need to reach 8 hearts (1,125 friendship points) and choose the Romantic Path in their 8-heart event. Reach 10 hearts to trigger their proposal event and get married. The table below shows the early thresholds.

How fast can you get there? A Loved gift gives +20 and talking to the character once a day gives +7, so roughly 27 points per day. From zero, reaching 8 hearts takes about 42 in-game days. Gift on their birthday for +40 (Loved), that plus a talk is 47 points in a single day.

How Heart Events Work

Friendship in Fields of Mistria is measured in heart levels from 1 to 10. Romance candidates have heart events at friendship levels 2, 4, 6, and 8, and a 10-heart proposal event once you are dating. Some events have extra requirements, such as completing a specific story quest first.

At friendship level 8, the fourth heart event lets you choose between the Best Friends route and the Dating route. Since v0.14.0 every candidate offers both paths. You can date multiple characters at once, but you currently cannot break up, and you cannot switch from Best Friends to Dating (or the reverse) later.

Dates: The Full System

Once you choose the Romantic Path in their 8-heart event, you can invite your partner on dates. There are 6 date types, each unlocked by a special item. You can go on one date per partner per week, and invitations are only accepted on Saturdays and Sundays, so if you are dating two people, take one out on Saturday and the other on Sunday.

Festival dates are also available, dance together at the Harvest Festival or watch the Shooting Star Festival together — dates and mechanics for both are in the festival calendar. The first time you try a new date type you receive a Photo Card to hang on your wall (note: photo cards cannot be retaken, so plan your outfit). Special note: if you are dating Caldarus before finishing the main story, several date locations are replaced by Deep Woods equivalents.

Marriage in the 1.0 Update: Requirements

Marriage is a full feature since the v1.0.0 update on August 5, 2026. The requirements, per the official wiki: be dating a candidate and reach 10 hearts — then Elsie visits your farm and hands you the Engagement Ring recipe. The recipe is not a finished ring. The ring needs a Dragon-Forged Core (plus 2 Diamonds, 4 Mistril Ingots, and 4 Gold Ingots). You see the Dragon Forge around mine floor 90, but the Core recipe sits behind the Dragonsworn Tablet, which means mine floor 100. That quest also wants Juniper and Eiland at 8 hearts. Dating them is not required; Best Friends is enough. There is still no house-upgrade gate. The quest guide lays out the seal chain.

The wedding itself: after a successful proposal you pick a date (the earliest is 5 days out), then talk to your fiancé(e) on the days before to customize the flower color, cake flavor, and reception meal. The wedding day is a semi-interactive cutscene: you're taken to the Sleeping Dragon Inn's guest room to choose from a selection of wedding outfits — which you keep permanently — while the townsfolk handle your watering and animal chores for the day. Your spouse then moves into the farmhouse, and the next day you receive 3 pieces of their personal furniture in the mail, each with unique spouse interactions.

Proposal Events & Proposal Gifts: Each Candidate's Unique Item

Proposing is its own little event chain. Hold the crafted Engagement Ring and a special "Discuss" prompt appears on your partner. It plays a proposal cutscene in which you can propose or postpone — and before that choice, the candidate presents you a special unique item that cannot be obtained any other way.

Because you can date several candidates at once, the wiki confirms a completionist trick: go through every candidate's proposal event, collect every unique proposal gift, and only finalize with the one you actually marry. Postponing does not lock you out.

Which item each candidate gives is not yet fully documented on the community wiki, so we don't list them here — we only publish verified data. Each candidate's proposal scene is also written for their personality (Juniper's plays out on the Summit, for example — see her page).

Having Children: How It Works

All 1.0 facts below come from the official wiki's Player Children page:

• Condition: you must be married. Two weeks after the wedding, a dream introduces the Great Bird, guide of souls, who leaves a Mystical Feather in your inventory.
• You decide, not your spouse: hold the Feather to open the family conversation — your spouse never brings it up on their own, and you can postpone.
• Delivery choice: a second dream lets you pick how the baby arrives — delivered by the Great Bird (default), carried by a female spouse, or carried by you (available regardless of your pronouns). The baby arrives 2 weeks later, with the due date marked on the calendar.
• One child per save as of 1.0.
• Each candidate has one set child with fixed gender and looks (March's daughter Fray, Juniper's daughter Rune, Caldarus' daughter Tephra with little horns…). Your spouse suggests a name, but you can change it.
• Do children grow up? No — as of 1.0 the child stays a baby indefinitely. The wiki notes it is not known whether future growth stages are planned; nothing is officially announced.
• Daily life: your spouse carries the baby on their schedule, you can carry them yourself with no gameplay penalty, or leave them in the Crib that Landen mails you.

Breakups, Divorce & Dating Multiple People

The community asks these three constantly — here is the verified 1.0 state:

• You cannot break up. Once you pick the Dating (or Best Friends) route in an 8-heart event, there is no way to undo or switch it.
• There is no divorce. The wiki states there is no divorce mechanic as of 1.0, and it is not known whether one is planned.
• You can date everyone at once. Dating multiple candidates simultaneously is fully supported, with no jealousy system documented — but you can only marry one.

Hidden Candidates: Seridia & Caldarus

The two hidden romance candidates have the most dramatic wedding visuals in the game, because behind their human forms, both are ancient dragons. Caldarus is the guardian of Mistria, sealed for centuries until you repair his statue. Seridia is the former Witch Queen, sealed beneath the world by Caldarus and the Dragonsworn, then freed as you break the seals.

To pursue either, complete their story quests: break the Fire Seal on mine floor 60 for Caldarus, and free Seridia by breaking every seal in the mines — her page walks through the full questline. Once their stories are unlocked, they romance like any other candidate, right down to a wedding between dragons.

Who Players Actually Romance (Community Pulse)

Across r/FieldsOfMistriaGame and the Steam forums, a clear fan-favorite ranking has emerged since 1.0 launched:

• March is the runaway #1, players love his "grumpy tsundere who slowly warms up" arc. His 8-heart events, his early gift of an upgraded magic hoe, and his slow-burn "act like a meanie, show he cares anyway" writing keep topping "why is March the fave?" threads.
• Balor wins the "mysterious merchant" crowd, one player put it simply: "he stole my breath and heart."
• Hayden is the only older, more mature-looking candidate, praised as a "big marshmallow" of a rancher.
• Ryis has a devoted "best boy" fanbase as the sweet carpenter who isn't fully settled into town.
